This year’s final of the Young Business Dragons was held in Ffos Las Racecourse and NetBop’s Director, Andrew Downie, was one of the Dragons on the judging panel.

The annual event, which is run by the Swansea Bay Partnership, aims to build a better relationship between business and local schools and sees over 7000 pupils in the local area taking part.

Each group of students embarks on a 6 month programme to come up with a business idea, fully research it and in many cases, generate a prototype, before presenting their winning pitch to the panel of the three Dragons. To engage businesses in the programme, each team were assigned a mentor from a local business from across the region offering the pupils hand on experience and knowledge.

Graham Edwards, Chief Executive of sponsors, Wales & West Utilities, said: “The ideas that have been developed throughout this year’s competition have been truly inspiring. Each team has displayed real entrepreneurial flair in the creation and development of their ideas.“

NetBop founder Andrew Downie said: “Being involved in this type of event is not only fun, but superb to see this enterprising activity happening at school level“

“Everyone was extremely impressed with the amount of effort and quality of the final business ideas coming from the Year 10 pupils. A very well done to all teams involved and especially to the winner’s Zip Away.“

After fierce competition from all the innovative business idea’s, this year’s winners were Year 10 pupils from Ysgol Gyfn Ystalyfera and their team ‘Zip Away’ with their unique rucksack invention featuring a roll out pillow and sleeping bag.

The winning team scooped the £1,000 prize money and the now coveted title of Swansea Bay Young Business Dragons 2012.
